Care & Repair Conference 2010 - Speakers' Details

Information Sessions 1: 11.30am -12.45pm

OUR LIFE AS ELDERS
The Centre for Rural Health mission is to advance knowledge
of health and health services in rural and remote communities.
It s seeks to help older people to help themselves in remote,
rural and peripheral communities. The session will explore how
CRH is actively engaging with older people’s skills, experience
and knowledge; nurturing enterprising and pro-active activity
among older people; and building older people’s capacity for
innovation, action, enterprise and voluntary activity.
Kate Stephen: Centre for Rural Health Policy

GUIDE TO EU PROCUREMENT LEGISLATION
The EU rules covering Council service procurement remain
a hot topic. With the Scottish Government currently holding
a consultation on social care procurement, knowing how
these rules might apply to your organisation, whether a
supplier or buyer of services, has never been more important.
New 'remedies' rules giving suppliers greater rights have also
just taken effect. This session will help steer you through this
ever-changing area by running through the key points you
need to understand as well as explaining the recent changes.
David McGowan: Maclay Murray Spence

WORKING TOGETHER ON C&R
Occupational therapists and support workers help people
engage as independently as possible in the activities
(occupations) which enhance their health and wellbeing This
session will give an overview of the role of the OT in general
and in particular the ones that Care & Repair are most likely
to be working with. It will also look at areas of good practice
where joint working has led to benefits for service users.
Elizabeth MacDonald: College of Occupational Therapists

WORKING WITH LINTEL TRUST
Lintel Trust operates Scotland-wide, and provides grant support
to housing and community related projects. One of its
Programme themes is Older People, where we aim to support
projects that help older people to remain in their own homes
for longer. The Trust has provided grant support to a number
of Care and Repair and Handyperson schemes across the
country. The session will explore further joint working
possibilities.
Pauline Barbour: Lintel Trust

Information Sessions 2: 2.30pm - 3.45pm

EQUAL OPPORTUNITIES FOR ETHNIC ELDERS
The session will explore how we can encourage the take up
of services by Black and Minority Ethnic (BME) communities.
Current projects include the Happy to Translate Logo to
promote access to services by overcoming language barriers
and the Older People Services Development Project to
increase uptake of services and benefits.
Rohini Sharma Joshi: Equal Opportunities Programme

DEVELOPING SOCIAL RETURN ON INVESTMENT MEASURES
There are many things which we value, as societies and
individuals, which cannot be easily captured in economic terms.
And yet, most decision making in the private, public and third
sectors are based solely on costs and price. Social Return on
Investment (SROI) is an analytic tool for measuring and
accounting for a much broader concept of value.
SROI aims to assign a monetary figure to social and
environmental value which is created. The session examines
how Care & Repair Managers can make a stronger case for
funding.
Tim Goodspeed: EFM Limited

WORKING WITH TELECARE
Telecare consists of equipment and services that support safety
and independence in the home. The equipment can sense risks
such as smoke, floods and gas, can remind people to take pills
and even call for help if they have an accident. A number of
Care & Repair offices already work with Telecare and the
session will look at the TSA Code of Practice and how further
joint working can develop in Scotland.
Marian Preece: Telecare

ENERGY ASSISTANCE PACKAGE
The new Energy Assistance Package is expanding so that many
more households can benefit. With rising fuel prices and bitterly
cold weather it's not just the elderly that will struggle with their
heating costs. By opening up the help available, 10,000 more
families will benefit from help to make their homes more energy
efficient and cut their bills by hundreds of pounds. The session
will introduce the new scheme and discuss joint working
possibilities.
Kim Oliver: Energy Saving Trust
